Hokies Football: G Wyatt Teller Working With Second Team

Over the past couple weeks, leaks coming out of Virginia Tech football practice suggested that there was a little bit of a surprise on the offensive line depth chart with Wyatt Teller practicing with the second team offensive line and Colt Pettit taking the first team reps at left guard. On Thursday, Justin Fuente addressed the situation regarding Teller's spot on the offensive line depth chart. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/768934909079592960 Justin Fuente confirmed what surprised media at Tuesday's open practice that Wyatt Teller is practicing with the second team offensive line while Colt Pettit is practicing as the first team left guard. With Pettit getting what seems to be all the first team left guard reps, Teller seems likely to be coming off the bench for at least the season opener against Liberty with Pettit starting at left guard. To say this is a surprise would be understating it as Teller looked to be a contender to potentially be an All-ACC offensive guard this season. Of course, not starting only one game would definitely not stop from Teller from earning those type of honors but to see him not getting first team reps is still shocking. Despite this current setback, Teller still seems likely to be the starting left guard by the time the Hokies face off in Bristol against Tennessee. However, it's starting to look like that it wouldn't be surprising to see Pettit start over Teller for more than beyond the season opener given the fact that it seems like Teller is only getting reps with the second team. Meanwhile, the emergence of Colt Pettit is a good sign for now and the future for the Hokies as if Teller takes back the starting left guard job as most still expect by the Battle at Bristol, Pettit seems to be a quality backup now that also should be a solid replacement at right guard for senior Augie Conte in 2017. With the change of regime, many expected there to be some surprises in terms of players gaining and losing playing time but almost no one thought Wyatt Teller could be someone that would be in serious danger of losing his starting spot at least for a game.
