Hokies Football: VT Honors Frank Beamer, Will Give His #25 Jersey To Special Teams Player of the Week

It's the first game week of the 2016 season, and Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech Hokies had their first game week press conference ahead of their season opener on Saturday against the Liberty Flames. Today, Fuente started off the press conference with a big announcement about a way in which the Hokies plan to honor former head coach Frank Beamer this fall. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/770290560963842049 Virginia Tech will honor Frank Beamer by giving his #25 jersey to the special teams player of the week throughout the season. Fuente also says that they expect to announce who will wear #25 for their season opener against Liberty this upcoming Thursday. This is a creative and fantastic way of honoring the coach who changed the way football teams at all levels approached special teams in many ways including putting some of his most talented athletes on special teams. The legacy of Beamer Ball will live on forever in the sport of football as just about every top coach has looked to Virginia Tech for special teams tips with Ohio State's Urban Meyer being a specific big name that has looked to replicate Beamer's special teams. For Justin Fuente, he hopes to continue on that tradition of great special teams at Virginia Tech and this is a great way of making a statement while also giving players something to push to achieve each week. It will be interesting to see who will earn the #25 jersey the first time and whether this tradition will continue on beyond the 2016 season. This is a tremendous way of honoring the legacy of Frank Beamer and a great job by Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech athletic department to put something like together.
