Hokies Football: Jerod Evans, Greg Stroman are the Hokies of the Game Against North Carolina

The Virginia Tech Hokies came out prepared for the difficult conditions and it showed as the Hokies got their best victory of the 2016 season with a 34-3 win over the previously 17th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. After the win, the Hokies are set to jump a decent amount in the top 25 from their 25th spot last week ahead of a cross-divisional road game at Syracuse. The Hokies were absolutely dominant on defense and fairly opportunistic on offense and while there were plenty of strong performances, two players stood out to receive this week's Hokies of the Game honors.

Offensive Player of the Game: Jerod Evans

For the third straight week, Jerod Evans receivers our offensive player of the game honors after what was another solid performance. Evans was far from perfect and struggled to get in rhythm early in game but despite not playing well, Evans did get in a rhythm and did what he could to get the Hokies the victory. Evans struggled throwing the football as he was 7-for-17 with for 75 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions unlike his counterpart while also having 21 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown with a couple big losses coming from sacks. Evans wasn't great especially through the air but he avoided big mistakes through the air and was good enough in difficult conditions. Travon McMillian also gets an honorable mention spot here as the redshirt sophomore had his best game in weeks with 17 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown. If the Hokies can get McMillian and the rushing game going, Virginia Tech's offense will become quite hard to even slow down.

Defensive Player of the Game: Greg Stroman

There were plenty of players worthy of this honor but Greg Stroman was our choice this week with a strong performance in the difficult conditions. Stroman ended Mitch Trubisky's long streak of pass attempts without an interception with a great play to tip a pass and then dive and get a big interception that gave the Hokies great field position. Overall, Stroman was solid in coverage as the junior cornerback had 3 pass breakups and a tackle in addition to his big interception. Stroman also made a difference on special teams in a unique way as he had 2 punts for an average of 40 yards including one punt that put UNC inside the 20. Stroman made a big impact on this game in multiple ways and had his best performance since the Liberty season opener. Andrew Motuapuaka also gained a lot of consideration after had had 12 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and 1 interception as the junior mike linebacker has improved significantly. Vinny Mihota has been playing well for much of the season but had his first big statistical game on Saturday with 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss while Woody Baron made some great plays with 3 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and nearly had an interception. Congrats to Jerod Evans and Greg Stroman on receiving our Hokies of the game honors for Virginia Tech's 34-3 win at North Carolina.
