Hokies Football: Jerod Evans, Joey Slye Are Our Hokies Of the Game Against Pittsburgh

The Virginia Tech Hokies finally ended their winless drought at Pittsburgh as they beat the Panthers 39-36 for their first win in program history at Heinz Field over Pitt. The Hokies were led by a strong offensive performance that wasn't great in the red zone but scored nine different times and got enough touchdowns to get the job done. With that said, here are our Hokies of the Game against Pittsburgh.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Jerod Evans

Jerod Evans wasn't perfect but he showed plenty of grit and toughness returning from an ankle injury to lead the Hokies to victory while also letting his playmakers make plays and taking advantage of a Pittsburgh defense that did not adjust at all. Evans made plenty of big plays and once again was critical to the Hokies getting 6-2 and maintain their control of the ACC Coastal. Evans went 24-for-40 for 406 passing yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions while also having 11 carries for 33 rushing yards. Evans gave his playmakers the chances to make big plays and they did just that while Evans did exactly what he needed to in this game to get the Hokies' first ever win at Heinz Field. Virginia Tech's talented trio of receivers also shined headlined by Isaiah Ford who had 10 catches for 143 yards and a record-breaking 23rd career receiving touchdown plus a 26-yard carry. Meanwhile, Bucky Hodges and Cam Phillips both also had big games as Hodges had 6 catches for 145 receiving yards while Phillips had 6 catches for 109 yards and led the Hokies on the ground with 43 rushing yards on 5 carries. After the game, Andrew Allegretta tweeted out a very interesting note on this performance from the Hokies' talented receiving trio. https://twitter.com/AAllegretta/status/791842798555324417

Defensive/Special Teams Hokie of the Game: Joey Slye

While the defense made some good plays and there were a couple of defensive players who could have gotten this, there is no doubt that Joey Slye deserves the recognition after what was the best game of his collegiate career by far. All of Joey Slye's field goal attempts did come inside 40 yards but when the Hokies failed in the red zone, Slye made sure the Hokies got on the board as he made all six of his field goals plus all three of his extra points and having 6 touchbacks out of 10 kickoffs in the Hokies' 39-36 win. Slye's 6 field goals also tied the ACC record for most field goals in a single game while his 21 points broke the record for most points in a game by a Virginia Tech kicker. Slye's performance was tremendous and may have capped off by how he seemed to put Jesse Palmer in awe when he booted one kickoff through the uprights. https://twitter.com/SamDCooper/status/791816762081902592 Mook Reynolds received some consideration after having a solid game in which he had 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 interception. Andrew Motuapuaka got beat a couple times but also forced a couple fumbles while also having 4 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. Terrell Edmunds led the Hokies with 10 tackles while also having a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Congrats to Jerod Evans and Joey Slye on being named our Hokies of the Game against Pittsburgh.
