Hokies Football: Joey Slye Named a Semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award

Joey Slye has been fairly reliable for the Hokies over his first three collegiate seasons and that was especially true last Thursday as Slye made all six of his field goal attempts plus three extra points while having over half of his kickoffs go for touchbacks. Overall, Slye has been extremely reliable for the Hokies inside of 40 yards while also having a significant amount of touchbacks. With Slye having a strong season, national recognition was certain to come and after earning the ACC Specialist of the Week honors last week; Slye has been named a semifinalist for a major award. https://twitter.com/HokiesFB/status/794195851866349569 Joey Slye was one of 20 kickers named as a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award which goes to the best kicker in college football. Slye is 16-for-20 on field goals and 32-for-33 on extra points this season while also having 46 touchbacks from 58 kickoffs. Slye has been particularly good from inside 40 yards as the junior has made all 15 of his field goal attempts from inside 40. Slye is one of only two kickers from the ACC to make this cut along with Clemson's Greg Huepel. Slye seems very likely to receive some sort of All-ACC honors this year while also now being in the hunt for the Lou Groza Award. Congrats to Joey Slye on being named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. Stay up with The Tech Lunch Pail for the latest on the Hokies via Facebook, Twitter, and our email reminders.
