The Virginia Tech Hokies opened the season with a dominant 80-67 win over Maine that would likely have been at least a 20-point victory if it wasn't for the Hokies running without a point guard plus having multiple backup players on the floor. Tonight, the Hokies will look to keep the solid start rolling with Virginia Tech taking on High Point in what should be another comfortable victory.
While High Point can't be overlooked, High Point has only played Division III Averett so far with a 74-41 victory over them, but High Point lost the top 3 scorers from last season and doesn't have a significant contributor over 6'8'', eliminating any concerns with dealing with size in the frontcourt though Khadim Sy showed a lot of promise in his debut.
Zach LeDay was dominant in the Hokies' opener with 20 points and 12 rebounds and will face off against a High Point team that's stronger in the frontcourt than the backcourt. Despite that, expect LeDay to be plenty up to the challenge as he showed against weaker opposition time and time again last season with a double-double quite likely for LeDay.
If LeDay were to have an off night, the Hokies have plenty of other players that can step up.
Seth Allen was kept quiet in the season opener but against a fairly young High Point team, Allen seems poised to go off and have a strong performance. Meanwhile, Ahmed Hill looked strong in his first basketball game since the spring of 2015 with Hill playing great defense and shooting 50% from beyond the arc. Hill already looks like the Hokies' best wing player and another strong game should be expected out of the redshirt sophomore guard.
Justin Bibbs struggled in the opener and Virginia Tech will look to get him going while he may not face as much attention with the way Hill looked in the opener. Looks for Bibbs to bounce back this week after struggling while Ty Outlaw seemed to have some debut jitters as he struggled shooting the basketball, but likely will be more comfortable after making his collegiate debut on Friday.
Khadim Sy had an impressive debut with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks in only 15 minutes with Buzz Williams calling him the most polished freshman big man he's ever had. Sy as solid in his debut and seems likely to play a little more tonight after having such a strong debut against Maine.
Buzz Williams will have the Hokies ready to get the job done once again led by a strong performance from Zach LeDay and a talented backcourt that will take advantage of the weakness and inexperience in the High Point backcourt. Virginia Tech will comfortably take care of business on their way to a 2-0 start.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 78, High Point 61
