Virginia Tech RB Marshawn Williams is Out For The Season Due To a Knee Injury

Marshawn Williams broke on the season as a freshman in 2014 and gained a reputation as a bulldozer that could run through defensive players and even reminded some fans of former NFL star Marshawn Lynch given Williams's style. However, Williams tore his ACL during that season and then redshirted in 2015 after suffering setbacks in his recovery. This year, Williams returned after missing the first two games and jumped into Virginia Tech's running back rotation as a power runner that got a fair amount of reps in the fourth quarter to try to wear down opposing defenders. Today, the Hokies had some surprising and unfortunate news on Williams. Justin Fuente announced that Marshawn Williams is out for the season due to a knee injury suffered against Notre Dame. Williams had 59 carries for 244 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Williams has brought plenty of energy with his physical running style, and the Hokies will likely look to Steven Peoples to take much of Williams's role. This latest knee injury is heartbreaking for Williams given his past history of knee injuries and while we don't know specifically the injury, it does seem clear that it is significant given how Justin Fuente got emotional during the press conference talking about it. You also have to question the decision to let Williams touch the field even when the Hokies knew he had picked up some sort of injury. What seems clear is that the Virginia Tech coaching staff did not know the extent to which Williams was injured. We here at The Tech Lunch Pail hope for a speedy and full recovery in the coming for Williams and hope to see him back on the field soon.
