Woody Baron Makes ACSMA All-ACC First Team, Thirteen Hokies Receive ACSMA All-ACC Honors

With the regular season being almost over and the Virginia Tech Hokies playing their 13th game this week in the ACC Championship against Clemson in Orlando, postseason honors are starting to come out with the media's choices for their All-ACC honors being released today. Unsurprisingly, a high number of Virginia Tech players received some sort of honors from the ACSMA All-ACC teams today. Thirteen Hokies received some sort of ACSMA All-ACC honors today led by Woody Baron, Isaiah Ford, and Tremaine Edmunds. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/803328186012631040 Woody Baron was named to the All-ACC First Team after having a fantastic season as one of the best defensive tackles across the country and the best defensive player on the Hokies this season. Baron finished the regular season with 50 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 5 QB hurries, and 1 fumble recovery in what was a senior breakout for the lightly-recruited Tennessee native. Baron was a force on a talented defensive line that was one of the best Charley Wiles has had over the past few years and while Virginia Tech has capable replacements for Baron, there is no doubt that Baron had one of the best single-season performances from a Virginia Tech defensive lineman and may even now have a chance at getting drafted thanks to his strong season. Isaiah Ford missed out on the All-ACC First Team by four votes and that may be largely due to stats as Ford was fourth in receiving yards behind the three guys who beat his for the spot though based on watching Ford play, he clearly is one of the ACC's top three wide receivers and should have received a spot over North Carolina's Ryan Switzer who is quite good but not as good as Ford. Overall, Ford has had another great season with 69 receptions for 949 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns while also breaking Virginia Tech's career receptions and receiving touchdowns records. In addition to that, Ford also has more receptions and receiving yards right now through 12 games than he did last year. Tremaine Edmunds is developing into a star on Virginia Tech's defense and is already showing the talent to be one of Virginia Tech's best linebackers ever with a strong 2016 performance to earn All-ACC Second Team honors. Edmunds had 91 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 8 QB hurries, 2 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery in what was a tremendous season for Edmunds. The youngest of the Edmunds trio is already looking like the most talented and is someone that even NFL scouts should start keeping an eye on after an impressive first 12 games. https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/803328183592452097 https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/803328303163731969 Six Hokies made the third team led by WR Bucky Hodges who made it as a tight end despite not playing there though Hodges did have a solid season with 42 receptions for 598 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Jonathan McLaughlin and Augie Conte received third team honors as well while Wyatt Teller received honorable mention honors though Conte is somewhat of a surprise on the third team. Defensively, Andrew Motuapuaka's big improvement earned him a spot as he's had 102 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 interception, 4 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries in a much better junior season. Meanwhile, Greg Stroman was one of the ACC's top cover cornerbacks with injuries preventing him from getting more than third team recognition as Stroman has had 11 tackles, 3 interceptions, 8 pass breakups, and a blocked field goal in nine games. Injuries slowed Ken Ekanem but the senior DE was solid with 31 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 2 pass breakups, and 11 QB hurries on his way to honorable mention honors. Both of Virginia Tech's starting safeties also deservingly received honorable mention spots with Chuck Clark having 77 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble while Terrell Edmunds has had 72 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, and 1 fumble recovery. Joey Slye also received All-ACC Third Team honors as he went 20-for-26 on field goals including 19-for-20 from inside 40 yards this season while also seeming to be able to get touchbacks off kickoffs as the Hokies wanted him to.
