Jerod Evans is number 2 in our top 10 Hokies countdown. [Credit: Harley Taylor][/caption]Our countdown of the top 10 Hokies continues on to our number 2 selection who wasn't even officially a starter for the Hokies till within a few weeks before Virginia Tech opened the season against Liberty.
That man is Jerod Evans.
Jerod Evans seemed to be in the driver's seat after spring practice, but it took till within two weeks of the opening kickoff against Liberty. The length of the QB competition raised fears as to whether the Hokies would have a talented quarterback to run Justin Fuente's offense but it didn't take long for those fears to be quieted and Virginia Tech fans to dream again.
Jerod Evans became a star in Blacksburg and to an extent nationally on his way to being a major catalyst for the Hokies' first 10-win season and ACC Coastal title since 2011. Evans led the Hokies in passing and rushing as he had 3,546 passing yards, a 63.5% completion rate, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while also rushing for 846 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 204 carries.
Evans did it all and while he wasn't perfect, he was quite good and made some spectacular plays including his incredible touchdown run against East Carolina where he looked a little like Michael Vick making guys miss. Evans's tremendous season shockingly led him to being snubbed from All-ACC recognition largely also due to the fact that the ACC also had the top 2 in Heisman voting and the number 1 2017 NFL Draft quarterback prospect.
Evans was a star for the Hokies and on the field, he was relentless with his bulldozing running style showcasing the fact that he wasn't a player that was going to give up on any play easy and was ready to fight for every single yard he could get. Evans also made some big plays through the air, and shattered his fair share of single-season records for Virginia Tech quarterbacks in both passing and rushing.
Evans made the surprising decision to declare for the NFL Draft which almost nobody expected after the Belk Bowl, but now that evaluators have been able to look at Evans's tape, Evans should be drafted while he seems right now a likely fourth or fifth round pick. Evans has the athleticism and arm strength that any team would want, but he has plenty of things to work on including his mechanics, pocket awareness, and progressing through reads.
Jerod Evans had a season to remember in Blacksburg that has launched the Hokies back to national prominence and has left plenty of great memories for Virginia Tech fans in his one season with the Hokies.
