If the Boston College game was an indication of how hot this team can be from long range, this game was the exact opposite. They shot 16.7% from the three-point line in the 1st half, and the 2nd half was worse. They shot 12.5%, bringing their total game percentage down to a lowly 15% In the 1st half, it was a story of whistles and turnovers. Through the first six minutes of the game, there were nine whistles that brought the pace of the game to a slow crawl for most of the half, and the Hokies committed seven turnovers in the first frame. Virginia jumped out to a 10-0 lead, before Justin Bibbs hit a three while being fouled to close the gap to 10-4 with 16:15 left in the half. The closest the game was in the 1st half was a 15-10 lead for the Cavaliers at the 10:56 mark. However, the Cavs went on a quick 7-0 burst of their own to open the lead back up, and it never got under double-digits for the rest of the half. The Hokies struggled to make any type of shot in the first half, only making a single field goal up until the under-12 media timeout, and finished the half with almost half of their 21 points from the free throw line. Chris Clarke was the lone bright spot in the first half, as he showed off his assertiveness. He got to the basket several times, drawing fouls in the process, and sped up the otherwise composed Virginia defense. He finished the half with only five points, but also contributed two assists and grabbed three rebounds. In the 2nd half, it wasn't a much better showing by the Hokies. Ty Outlaw opened up the scoring with a burst of five points, but the Cavs were able to respond with two three-pointers of their own. At one point, the lead ballooned to 19 with around 14 minutes left to play. The Hokies didn't go away though, which they're known for, and made a run to cut the lead down to 11 with around nine minutes to play. However, after LeDay was landed on by a UVA player and left the game, UVA went on their own run to take the lead right back up to 17 with less than seven minutes to go. At that point, it was much of the same as the Cavs kept a steady large lead with their largest lead of 26 points coming with 1:07 remaining Statistical takeaways from this game:
  • 18 second-chance points for the Cavs compared to just 3 for the Hokies
  • 15 assists compared to 9 turnovers for the Cavs and 5 assists compared to 14 turnovers for the Hokies
  • 15% from three for the Hokies. They can't afford to miss open threes in games, UVA can. That was the main difference tonight.
  • Seth Allen led the team with 12 points, Chris Clarke led the team with seven rebounds, and both Clarke and Robinson had a game-high two assists.
The Hokies return to action after a full week off, as they travel to Miami next Wednesday. That game will be at 9 PM.
