Virginia Tech Hires Maryland's John Szefc as Baseball Manager

IMG 1821
The Virginia Tech Hokies have spent the past few weeks looking for a new baseball manager after letting Pat Mason go the day after the Hokies' season ended. Virginia Tech's search has been very quiet with very little information about it coming to light. However, the Hokies have found their next baseball manager. https://twitter.com/VT_Baseball/status/873194110156496896 Virginia Tech will hire Maryland manager John Szefc as their next baseball manager to replace Pat Mason. Virginia Tech is the third managerial job for Szefc along with Marist and Maryland with stops as an assistant at UL-Lafayette, Kansas, and Kansas State in between his first two managerial jobs. Szefc is a fantastic hire for the Hokies as in his five years at Maryland, he led the Terps to their first NCAA Tournament in 43 years in 2014 while also leading Maryland to three total NCAA Tournament appearances (2014, 2015, 2017) including 2 Super Regional appearances in his five years while not having a single losing record. Szefc also has ACC experience from his first two years at Maryland which included him leading the Terps to the Super Regionals in his second year at the helm. Szefc also had success when he was at Marist leading that program to 4 NCAA Tournament appearances from 1996 to 2002 that included three-straight from 2000 to 2002. It's impossible not to be impressed with the hire Whit Babcock made going and getting a proven coach out of the Big 10 to come to Blacksburg. Yes, Babcock does have the benefit of VT being in the ACC along with the major English Field renovations set to be complete in time for next season, but the presence of one of America's top athletic directors in Babcock also likely helped VT get Szefc.
