Virginia Tech Makes the Top 5 for Three-Star TE James Mitchell

IMG 20170713 012056
With four-star TE Kyle Pitts committing to Florida, Virginia Tech's focus at tight end will now all be on talented Southwest Virginia TE James Mitchell. Yesterday, the Hokies got some good news on Mitchell with VT making the cut for the top tight end in Virginia. https://twitter.com/j_mitch82/status/888173062251794432 James Mitchell released his top 5 yesterday which included Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Duke, and South Carolina. Mitchell has a strong offer list with this cut eliminating some very good schools including Clemson, Miami, Ole Miss, Louisville, and West Virginia. Mitchell is well-regarded with Rivals having him as a four-star while ESPN, 247 Sports, and the 247 Sports Composite have him as a high three-star. Mitchell is ranked as the 13th best TE by Rivals, seventh best TE-H by ESPN, 56th best WR by the 247 Sports Composite, and 79th best WR by 247 Sports. Mitchell is definitely one of the top recruits in the Commonwealth as he is ranked sixth best in the Commonwealth by Rivals, seventh best by the 247 Sports Composite, 11th best by ESPN, and 12th best by 247 Sports. Virginia Tech has been consistently seen as the favorite for Mitchell while Tennessee and Duke have been top challengers for the Hokies throughout Mitchell's recruitment. Georgia and South Carolina have gained ground more recently and while they aren't favorites at this point, Mitchell is a must get recruit for the Hokies who have had him around the top of their board on offense for a long time now along with Mitchell being the Hokies' top TE target especially with fellow TE target Kyle Pitts headed to Gainesville. VT has the advantage of being the in-state school while Mitchell is closer than many Virginia recruits usually are distance-wise being that he's from Southwest Virginia. What makes getting Mitchell even more important for VT is the fact that he is the best recruit to come out of Southwest Virginia over the past few years along with the Hokies having him as their top tight end target with VT not having any other clear TE targets after Mitchell at this point. Virginia Tech remains the favorite for James Mitchell, but it will be critical for the Hokies to keep Southwest Virginia's best recruit in-state with that emphasis being increased even more with Kyle Pitts off the board now. The good news for VT is that they've made the cut but still have plenty of work left with Tennessee, Duke, Georgia, and South Carolina all in the hunt.
