Josh Jackson, Adonis Alexander are Our Hokies of the Game Against West Virginia

Postgame Celebration VT WVU
Virginia Tech had some standout performances on both offense and defense in their thrilling 31-24 victory over West Virginia last night. While there were a few players who had a strong case to win our Hokies of the Game honors, two players stood out above the rest.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Josh Jackson

Josh Jackson got off to a slow start in his debut but during the game, we saw the young quarterback mature before our eyes and lead the Hokies to victory. Jackson was a threat both through the air and on the ground, making strong impressions on fans, analysts, and former players all across the country. The stats back Jackson up as he went 15-for-26 for 235 passing yards and a TD while running for 101 yards and a TD. Jackson proved to be the dual-threat playmaker that Justin Fuente said he was making lots of good decisions with his legs and through the air. Josh Jackson showed lots of maturity in this game as well, maturity that was best shown on his late QB scramble where he got the first down and then slid in bounds to keep the clock running. Jackson put the ACC on alert last night as it's clear that the Hokies' offense won't be slowed down anytime soon. Cam Phillips had one of the best games of his career with 7 receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown. Phillips showed that he is one of the best receivers not only in the ACC but also in America. Deshawn McClease provided a spark on the ground with 8 carries for 51 yards including a touchdown.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Adonis Alexander

There are a few candidates for this one and though Virginia Tech's pass defense wasn't the best, Adonis Alexander had a strong performance worthy of this distinction. Alexander showed why Bud Foster said he was the Hokies' best cornerback with 9 tackles, 1 TFL, and 3 pass breakups. Will Grier had very little success throwing in Alexander's direction as the junior cornerback found ways to break up almost every pass he was in coverage for. Alexander wasn't perfect with a missed tackle that helped WVU get a long TD along with a quick slant being run perfectly against him, but Alexander did quite well overall, earning this honor. Going forward, NFL scouts will have their eyes even more on Alexander especially with his improvements in man coverage. If Alexander keeps playing like this, he'll be one of the top cornerbacks in America this season. Andrew Motuapuaka had a very good game with 12 tackles, 2 QB hurries, and a sack that proved critical on the final drive of the game and forced WVU to use a timeout. Trevon Hill and Tim Settle both made some big plays as Hill had 4 tackles, 2 QB hurries, and a big interception while Settle had 2 tackle, 1 QB hurry, and a sack while being a force all night. Greg Stroman was quiet, but that was partly due to him not giving Grier any chances while Stroman also did have a pair of tackles and 1 pass breakup. Congrats to Josh Jackson and Adonis Alexander on being our Hokies of the Game against West Virginia.
