Virginia Tech Jumps from #18 to #16 in Polls

Entrance 2
Virginia Tech started the season at 21st and 22nd in the AP and Coaches polls, and after their impressive victory over West Virginia last weekend, the Hokies jumped to 18th in both polls. The 18th ranked Hokies faced Delaware for their first home game of the season at Lane Stadium and won 27-0 over the Blue Hens. Today, the team moved up in the AP poll and the Coaches Poll from 18th to 16th, jumping Miami who did not play this weekend because of Hurricane Irma. It may be a little surprising for the Hokies to jump two spots due to their sluggish offensive performance that never seemed to really get going, but the defense carried the load for the team this week and led the team to victory, thanks to strong performances from Tremaine Edmunds and Reggie Floyd, who were two of the standouts on the defense against Delaware. Clemson is still the top ranked ACC team going into the third week of the season, sitting comfortably at #3 after sacking Auburn quarterback Jarred Stidham eleven times in their 14-6 victory in Death Valley. Ohio State was #2 going into their primetime game against #5 Oklahoma on Saturday, but were outplayed by Baker Mayfield and the Sooners, who ran away with a 31-16 victory in the Horseshoe. Florida State is the next highest ranked ACC team at #11, dropping one spot after not playing their game against Louisiana Monroe this weekend because of the hurricane. The game between Connecticut and #21 South Florida was cancelled because of the hurricane as well, and #22 Florida cancelled their game against Northern Colorado. Louisville moved up to #14 after beating North Carolina 47-35 in Chapel Hill. After the Cardinals, the Hokies are #16, with Miami following closely behind at #17. Miami’s game in Tallahassee against Florida State this upcoming weekend has been postponed because of the hurricane, and Clemson will venture to Louisville for their first road test of the season after opening the season with two home games. College GameDay will be in attendance in Louisville. No other ACC teams received votes this week in the AP Poll, but two teams received votes in the Coaches Poll, with Duke receiving 3 votes and North Carolina State receiving 10. The Hokies travel to Dowdy-Ficken Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina, this weekend to face an East Carolina football team that is 0-2 after losing their first road game to West Virginia 56-20 this weekend. The Hokies will host Old Dominion next weekend for their second home game of the season, which is the white effect game for military appreciation. The Monarchs host North Carolina this weekend. The Hokies took care of business this past weekend, and assuming they execute these next two weekends, they should jump a few spots with other top 15 teams losing in the next two weeks and be near the top 10 when Clemson comes to Blacksburg on September 30.
