Virginia Tech Rises in the Polls After Win Over Boston College

Shegog Newsome 1
After a 23-10 win over Boston College, the Virginia Tech Hokies moved up to #15 in the AP Poll and to #17 in the Coaches Poll heading into their bye week. The Hokies, who came into their game this past weekend ranked 16 and 19 in the respective polls, held on for a victory against the Eagles, despite the fact the Hokies only scored 6 points the entire second half. Virginia Tech has a bye this week and will face North Carolina next in Lane Stadium on October 21st. The Hokies jumped one spot in the AP Poll and two spots in the Coaches Poll. The team was led by freshman quarterback Josh Jackson, who was 22-33 for 322 yards in Saturday’s game. Jackson completed 67% of his passes and he threw for one touchdown, along with one interception from a ball tipped at the line of scrimmage. Star wide receiver Cam Phillips left the game after one reception in the first quarter. However, Sean Savoy had an outstanding game with 9 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown. The Tech offense entered the Boston College red zone three times in the second half and kicked two fields goals, turning the ball over on downs as they tried to run the ball in from the 1-yard line on one drive. The Hokies held on to win 23-10, and the team will be resting throughout the next two weeks while they heal those that are banged up. Sitting at #15, Virginia Tech remains the third highest ranked ACC team in the AP Poll, with Clemson at #2 and Miami jumping two spots to #11. Clemson defeated Wake Forest 28-14 on Saturday, but quarterback Kelly Bryant left the game in the third quarter. The Hokies will travel to Miami to take on the Hurricanes on November 4 in a game that could decide the ACC Coastal champion. Miami will host ACC Coastal foe Georgia Tech this weekend after beating rival Florida State 24-20 this past weekend thanks to a late touchdown. The only other ACC team in the AP Poll is #20 North Carolina State who defeated former #17 Louisville. The Wolfpack have a bye week this week before they travel to Pittsburgh on the 14th. In the Coaches Poll, the Hokies moved up to #17 from #19, while Clemson is still #2, Miami is #10 and North Carolina State is #20. Georgia Tech and Louisville received votes in the AP Poll, while both teams, along with Virginia and Wake Forest, received votes in the Coaches Poll. The Hokies are in a great position and control their own destiny for the rest of the season. The Coastal Division matchup between Georgia Tech and Miami will have big implications on the next few weeks of conference play, and the Hokies play both of those teams on back-to-back weekends on the road. Virginia Tech is 5-1 and can clinch bowl eligibility in their next game against North Carolina (1-5).
