On a wet night in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech took care of business with a 24-3 win over Duke. Virginia Tech's win sets up a huge primetime showdown with undefeated Miami in a game that should decide the Coastal.
Virginia Tech was dominant on defense while the offense had some standout performers who were worthy of consideration for our Hokies of the Game honors. However, a pair of Hokies stood out to receive this week's Hokies of the Game honors.
Offensive Hokie of the Game: Deshawn McClease
Deshawn McClease played well in his return for the Hokies with 15 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown. Much like he did against West Virginia, McClease provided a spark that helped the Hokies' offense in this game with his speed and agility making a difference. The coaches have had plenty of praise for McClease in the past and after his big Saturday night, McClease should be at the top of the totem pole among the running backs alongside Travon McMillian. McClease also brings some versatility in the passing game that should see him receive a significant share of the carries if he can continue running the ball this well going forward. Josh Jackson didn't have a great night statistically, but he did better than the numbers suggested as he went 13-for-27 for 200 passing yards and a touchdown plus 20 rushing yards and a touchdown. Sean Savoy made some big plays with 2 catches for 28 yards and 3 carries for 30 yards including an impressive 26-yard touchdown reception.Defensive Hokie of the Game: Mook Reynolds
Mook Reynolds was the best player on the field Saturday night as the junior nickelback/whip linebacker had one of the best games of his career. Reynolds had 6 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 1 pass breakup as Reynolds was all over the field making plays. The North Carolina native was reliable in pass coverage, but was at his best in the box making some big plays defending the run including a forced fumble due largely to his great effort. Reynolds is a versatile playmaker that Bud Foster can use in numerous ways without having to worry about whether he can get the job done defending the run or the pass. Tremaine Edmunds led Virginia Tech with 10 tackles including a tackle for loss. Edmunds is continuing to impress scouts and is building a strong case to be an All-American this year. Terrell Edmunds had one of his best games of the season with 8 tackles and his second interception of the season.
