Eric Kumah, Anthony Shegog are the Hokies of the Game Against Georgia Tech

Shegog Newsome 1
Virginia Tech suffered their first upset loss of the season at Georgia Tech 28-22. It was far from a perfect game for the Hokies, but there were plenty of quality performances on both sides of the football in this game. However, a pair of players stood out to be our Hokies of the Game.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Eric Kumah

Eric Kumah had the best game of his career with 6 catches for 82 yards including a miraculous, alert catch that got the Hokies' offense going in the second half. That reception was somewhat luck, but it was also a great job of Kumah not giving up on the tipped ball. However, that was far from Kumah's only big catch as he had a great, 19-yard catch on fourth down in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter plus another catch where he broke multiple tackles to get a first down and more. Kumah struggled during the first four games of the season, but he has slowly but steadily broken through with this being by far his best game of the season. Kumah gives the Hokies that bigger receiver on the outside that they've been looking for, and fans should be excited about his future. Sean Savoy had a solid game as well with 3 catches for 20 yards and 3 carries for 32 yards including a 14-yard touchdown run that was absolutely masterful with Savoy making the best cut back ever on a jet sweep to turn a four-yard gain into a TD. Jalen Holston had a breakthrough game with 10 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown as he ran with the confidence of a man who's ready to push for the Hokies' top running back spot.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Anthony Shegog

There wasn't a player who brought more energy and intensity to this game on either side than senior linebacker Anthony Shegog and it showed. Shegog had his best game since last year's Belk Bowl with 11 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 forced fumble in a game where he made big tackle after big tackle. Shegog has had a limited role all season, but has stuck with it and when Bud Foster called upon him to have a bigger defensive role, Shegog stepped up to the plate and got the job done. Anthony Shegog could have easily transferred elsewhere and started, but the Stafford, VA native has stuck with the Hokies and done whatever Justin Fuente and Bud Foster have asked him to do whether that be on special teams or defense. With the energy and effort that Shegog has shown throughout his career, there is no doubt in my mind that Shegog should be wearing the 25 jersey on his Senior Day against Pittsburgh. Greg Stroman showed why he is one of the best cornerbacks in America with an interception returned for a touchdown, one tackle, and a big pass breakup where he was well-positioned to prevent a touchdown pass. Andrew Motuapuaka led the Hokies with 12 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss while Tremaine Edmunds had 9 tackles including a tackle for loss. Congrats to Eric Kumah and Anthony Shegog on being our Hokies of the Game against Georgia Tech.
