Virginia Tech Defeats Illinois 96-49

Chanette Hicks Delaware State 1 2016 1
On Thursday night, the Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball team traveled to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. The Hokies came into the game with a 5-2 record and left with a blowout victory, running the Illini out of the gym on their way to a 96-49 victory. Virginia Tech rebounded from two tough losses in the Paradise Jam tournament in Melbourne, Florida against Butler and West Virginia. Juniors Chanette Hicks and Regan Magarity led the way for the Hokies as they each scored 20 points in Tech’s victory. Hicks had a double-double, shooting 10-17 from the floor and dishing out 13 assists to go along with seven rebounds (three away from a triple-double), while Magarity had a double-double on 7-13 shooting and ten rebounds. Hicks also added six steals for the Hokies as she had her best all-around game of the season. This was Hicks’ second double-double of the season, the first coming against Butler six days ago. Magarity recorded her fourth double-double on the season and the fifth time she has had 10 or more rebounds in a game this season. Taylor Emery, Kendyl Brooks, Rachel Camp, and Aisha Sheppard each added a combined 46 points between the four of them to help the Hokies to their 47-point win. Emery had 9 points on 4-9 shooting with 5 rebounds, so it was one of the quieter nights she has had this season in the scoring category. Brooks scored six points tonight, her fourth straight game scoring six, and is averaging 7.9 points per game. Brooks shot 2-7 from behind the arc tonight and is shooting 36.2% this season from three. Camp scored 18 points for the Hokies on 7-11 shooting and corralled 6 rebounds in her second straight start. It was also her second straight game in double figures. Sheppard, the freshman from Alexandria, scored 13 points tonight and is averaging 8.5 points per game on the season. Overall, it was a great night from these four in a dominant win over Illinois. Kaela Kinder, Michelle Berry, and Erinn Brooks all played a few minutes tonight, with Berry the only one scoring points. Berry almost had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in the 25 minutes she played. The Hokies shot 52.9% from the floor against the Illini and shot 45.5% from downtown, while only allowing Illinois to shoot 25.4%. Illinois also was 0-13 from three-point range. It was a great all-around game from the Hokies, who improved to 6-2 on the season and host Radford next at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday at 2pm.
