Cam Phillips Will Miss the Camping World Bowl

Cam Phillips 2
Cam Phillips has had an impressive career with Virginia Tech over the past four years. Phillips saved his best for last, stepping up as the primary receiver this year on his way to earning All-ACC First Team honors, and breaking VT's career records for receptions and receiving yards. Unfortunately, we've seen the last of Cam Phillips in a Hokie uniform. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/943179135483965440 Virginia Tech announced today that senior WR Cam Phillips will miss the Camping World Bowl and have sports hernia surgery. Phillips's status for the East-West Shrine Game is also TBD. Despite playing two less games, Phillips had almost identical numbers to last season with 71 receptions for 964 yards and a career high 7 touchdowns. Phillips also averaged a career high 13.6 yards per reception, an improvement of 0.7 yards per reception from last year. The loss of Phillips is disappointing, especially given that he won't have one last chance to play in a big game for the Hokies. This is the right move for Phillips and VT to make sure their star receiver is healthy as he prepares for the NFL Draft where VT could have another large class of players selected. The loss of Phillips will force the Hokies' younger receivers to step up in a game where VT knows they will need to score some points. However, VT's receiving corps has improved as the season has gone along including Sean Savoy and especially Eric Kumah who went from being a non-factor to a featured playmaker this season. We wish Cam Phillips a speedy and full recovery and congratulate him on a great career.
