Our Tech Lunch Pail Awards continue with the Offensive Hokie of the Year. While there were plenty of talented newcomers, Cam Phillips had an impressive senior season and was the clear choice for this award.
Senior WR Cam Phillips was convincingly chosen as the Offensive Hokie of the Year by The Tech Lunch Pail staff. Phillips is one of only two offensive players who made our countdown of the top 10 Hokies along with senior OG Wyatt Teller.
Cam Phillips had an impressive senior season with 71 receptions for 964 yards along with career highs in touchdowns (7) and yards per reception (13.6). Phillips did this despite playing two fewer games this past season than he did in 2016. What makes this more impressive is the fact that Phillips put up these numbers despite the fact that he had to deal with a sports hernia injury throughout this season, an injury that sidelined him for the Camping World Bowl.
Because of his impressive season, Phillips received plenty of recognition including All-ACC First Team honors for the first time in his career. On top of that, Phillips broke the school records for receptions and receiving yards, a pair of records that Phillips may hold for at least a few years after breaking records that Isaiah Ford set last year.
Cam Phillips stepped up this season on the field as the focal point of the Hokie offense and had the best season of his career while also setting a great example for the Hokies' younger WRs that will help him leave a lasting legacy.
Josh Jackson also received some consideration for this recognition. The redshirt freshman QB had one of the best seasons among freshman QBs in the country with 2,991 passing yards, 20 touchdown, 9 interceptions, and a 59.6% completion rate. Jackson struggled down the stretch of the regular season with Yosuah Nijman out, but the freshman QB also had some impressive performances including an impressive debut against West Virginia.
Wyatt Teller may not draw a lot of attention given his role, but the Hokies' left guard had a great senior season worthy of attention on the way to earning All-ACC First Team honors. Yosuah Nijman's value showed after the Hokies struggled at left tackle when he missed the final five games of the season including regular season losses to Miami and Georgia Tech where Jackson struggled immensely.
