2017 TLP Top 10 Hokies: #1 Tremaine Edmunds

Tremaine Edmunds 3
Our countdown of the top 10 Hokies from the 2017 season as voted by The Tech Lunch Pail staff ends here at #1 with Tremaine Edmunds. When Tremaine Edmunds arrived on campus, everyone knew he had the potential to be a special player given his unique combination of size and athleticism combined with a NFL pedigree from his father, two-time Pro Bowl TE Ferrell Edmunds. In his two years as a starter, Edmunds became one of the best linebackers in Virginia Tech history. Edmunds comes in at #1 on our top 10 Hokies countdown after an impressive 2017 season in which he led the Hokies in tackles (109), tackles for loss (14), sacks (5.5), and forced fumbles (3). Those impressive numbers helped him earn First Team All-ACC honors along with some Second and Third Team All-American honors from multiple major publications. In addition to that, Edmunds was a finalist for the Butkus Award given to the best linebacker in college football. Edmunds's career will go down as one of the best ever for a Virginia Tech linebacker as he averaged over 11 tackles for loss per season despite the fact that he barely played during his freshman season. Edmunds also had more career tackles for loss (35) than great VT linebackers like Xavier Adibi (30) and Bruce Taylor (33.5) while he also had more TFLs and sacks than Vince Hall (30 TFLs, 9.5 sacks) despite having fewer career starts than all three of those players. Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, Edmunds is unanimously regarded as one of the best linebackers in the 2018 draft class alongside guys like Georgia's Butkus Award winner Roquan Smith. After those two, there isn't much consensus among scouts about who the top LBs are, another positive sign that Edmunds should be a first round pick even for skeptical Hokie fans. NFL scouts have Tremaine Edmunds as a first round pick with the Hokies' star having the potential to push himself into the top half of the first round with a strong NFL Combine. However, Edmunds is more than just an athletic freak as his football IQ is also quite good, making him a complete package with arguably the highest ceiling among linebackers in this year's NFL Draft.
