Virginia Tech Wrestling Picks Up Road Wins at Edinboro and Pittsburgh

VT Cheerleaders Miami 1 1
Virginia Tech Wrestling has started the second half of their regular season sitting at 10-2 and ranked 10th in the nation. They'll have a chance to climb higher in the upcoming rankings, following a road win against a well-known and respected wrestling school, Edinboro, and an ACC road win at Pittsburgh yesterday. Those wins were big to pick up, following a loss two weekends ago to then 10th ranked, Arizona State. First-year head coach Tony Robie faced his alma mater Edinboro last Friday night, where he also once served as an assistant coach. The homecoming for Robie turned into a scare as Virginia Tech trailed 12-10 with three weight classes remaining in the match. That's where All-American and 8th ranked, Zach Zavatsky, won a 10-2 major decision and put the Hokies up 14-12 overall with one match remaining. Jared Haught, ranked second in the nation, put together arguably the best match of his career, pinning Aaron Paddock in 1:34, the quickest pin of his career. With that win, Virginia Tech led 20-12 going into the final match, the 285 pound weight class. It featured two ranked opponents with Billy Miller of Edinboro being ranked 14th and Andrew Dunn of Virginia Tech being ranked 18th. Miller edged Dunn 3-2 overall, but it wasn't enough for Edinboro to make up the ground they lost in the previous two matches. Robie won against his alma mater as Virginia Tech won, 20-15. The Hokies carried that momentum into Sunday's dominant win on the road at Pittsburgh where they won, 31-6. Tech won 8 of the 10 matches and left with some positive notes for the upcoming week. Solomon Chishko won in his first match back since Missouri, which was in November. In the 141 pound weight class, Brent Moore upset 15th ranked Nick Zanetta by a score of 4-1. The biggest win of the day was in the 174 pound weight class as Hunter Bolen won by a technical fall with the score being 18-3. This upcoming week is arguably one of the toughest this regular season holds for Virginia Tech. They host 7th ranked Lehigh this Friday in Cassell Coliseum, their final non-conference opponent of the season. The Hokies are 0-2 this season against Top-10 opponents. Then on Saturday, they'll host Duke for their second ACC matchup of the season. It'll be the first of four straight ACC teams they'll face before the conference tournament in Chapel Hill.
