Virginia Tech's Regan Magarity Reaches 1,000 Points

Redshirt junior forward Regan Magarity scored her 1,000th career point on Sunday against the Miami Hurricanes. Magarity has had a very good career at Virginia Tech, scoring 70 points in her freshman season before being redshirted while scoring 176 points the following season as a redshirt freshman. From Norrkoping, Sweden, Magarity put up a stunning 446 points as a redshirt sophomore last year, and she has scored 313 points so far this season as a redshirt junior. With seven games remaining in the regular season, Magarity has plenty of time to add to her total. She has become one of, if not the most, integral part of the Virginia Tech offense over the past two seasons. She has helped the Hokies post a 64-56 record in the past four seasons and provided second year head coach Kenny Brooks with a strong foundation to build around.

Virginia Tech Beats Georgia Tech

With a strong performance from Magarity on Thursday night against Georgia Tech, the Hokies fended off the Yellow Jackets at home, winning 68-62. Magarity had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Taylor Emery had an excellent shooting night from the floor, shooting 8-15 from the field and making 5-6 from the charity stripe. The only other Hokie to score in double figures against the Yellow Jackets was freshman guard Aisha Sheppard who shot 50% from the floor and scored 11 points off the bench. Michelle Berry started the game but did not score in the 11 minutes she played, while Rachel Camp had four points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Alexis Jean was the other starter on Thursday and she contributed 8 points and 9 rebounds in her 33 minutes. Kendyl Brooks played just 18 minutes and scored 6 points while Chanette Hicks played 24 minutes and had four points and six rebounds.

Virginia Tech Falls to Miami

After a very good win against Georgia Tech, the Hokies hosted Miami on Sunday afternoon. Both teams entered the game at 14-7 overall, Tech being 3-5 in the conference and the Hurricanes with a 4-4 ACC record. Tech fell behind early, shooting just 38% in the first half, but came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. Emery had her second solid game in a row, scoring 14 points on 6-12 shooting and grabbing 8 rebounds for the Hokies. Magarity also had a strong game, scoring 17 points and adding 9 rebounds. However, Rachel Camp led Virginia Tech in scoring with 25 points, one of her best games of the season. Alexis Jean did not score a basket but did not play the entire game because of an injury to her nose, while Kendyl Brooks was just 1-5 from behind the arc. Coming off the bench, Chanette Hicks scored 13 points and Aisha Sheppard added 6. Kaela Kinder and Michelle Berry both played a few minutes as a result of the Hokies getting into foul trouble but neither of them scored a basket. With most of the scoring put on the shoulders of Camp, Magarity, and Emery, the Hokies slowly drew back into the game, pulling back within 3 points with two minutes to go but they could not regain the lead. Overall, a tough two games for Virginia Tech but beating Georgia Tech and losing to Miami was not the worst possible result. Towards the end of the Miami game, there was a spark for Virginia Tech that they could've used earlier in the game but it just came too late. Virginia Tech now has back-to-back road games at Syracuse this Thursday and at North Carolina next Wednesday before coming back to Cassell to host Virginia. The Hokies sit at 14-8 overall, 3-6 in the conference after these two games.
