AJ Bush Plans to Transfer From Virginia Tech After the Spring

VT Offensive Huddle 2
Recently, QB AJ Bush sent out a cryptic tweet that suggested that he was planning on transferring away from Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/ajbush23/status/957034649729060866 Yesterday, Justin Fuente confirmed what many expected. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/961333016932028416 Fuente told reporters that AJ Bush plans to transfer from Virginia Tech to play quarterback next fall. Bush will stay on scholarship this spring and summer depending on how long he needs to complete his degree before transferring. Fuente told reporters that he told Bush that he wanted him to switch positions, but that Bush wanted to play quarterback whether that was Virginia Tech or elsewhere. With Bush not having a path to the starting job, the former JUCO transfer has decided to head elsewhere for his final season of college football. In five games last season, Bush threw for 99 yards and a touchdown while running for 129 yards on 19 carries. Most of Bush's playing time came with the backups, but he did receive some first-team playing time against Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh. With Bush set to transfer, the stage has been set for Hendon Hooker to assume the backup quarterback job this spring. While most expect Josh Jackson to start next fall, it wouldn't be surprising if Hooker received some first team reps to push Jackson and create some competition that would be good for the development of both quarterbacks. For Bush, he will be an interesting target as a dual-threat quarterback with great speed and above-average arm strength. While it's unlikely that he'll end up at a power 5 program, a transfer to a Group of 5 or high-level FCS program would not be surprising. AJ Bush may also look to transfer closer to home to a program like Georgia Southern or Georgia State.
