No matter where they go, the Virginia Tech baseball team can’t escape the weather this season. A weekend snowstorm caused the Hokies to play a Saturday doubleheader at Boston College, which they split with the Eagles.
Tech traveled up to Chestnut Hill for its third ACC series of the season this weekend. Boston College won the first game of the weekend 7-4 on Friday night behind a four-run seventh inning. Tech out-hit the Eagles 8-4 and was leading going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the BC wasn’t going to go away easily.
Eight batters, three walks, an error, a passed ball and just one hit in the seventh inning gave Boston College a lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the game.
Connor Coward got the start for the Hokies on Friday, pitching six innings while giving up four runs on three hits. Coward struck out five batters during his outing.
The Hokies were unable to muster much offense for the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, managing just two runs on three hits. The Eagles took game two of the series 6-2 behind a 13 strikeout performance from starter Dan Metzdorf.
When the final game of the series rolled around, the Hokies didn’t waste any time getting things started on their way to a 5-2 victory.
Luke Horanski hit a two-run homer to right field in the top of the first inning to get the scoring started. Sam Fragale joined the party with a two-run bomb of his own in the top of the fourth. Joe Freiday, Jr. reached home in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jack Owens to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Hokies.
Boston College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to avoid the shutout, but they were unable to complete the comeback as the Hokies took the third game of the series.
Luke Scherzer got the win for Virginia Tech, pitching three innings and giving up no runs on three hits. Graham Seitz was credited with the save, tossing 1.1 innings and giving up no runs on one hit.
Freiday went 2-for-4 in the third game of the series, coming around to score once. Horanski and Fragale each went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Virginia Tech managed to win the final game of the series despite allowing 11 hits by the Eagles. Boston College left nine batters on base in Saturday’s game.
Up next for Tech is a Tuesday afternoon matchup against Liberty. The Hokies own a 39-25 record all time against the Flames and split last year’s series. Liberty comes into Tuesday’s game with a 13-9 record, but is just 2-5 on the road. The Hokies have performed well at home this season, going 3-1 so far at English Field.
Tuesday’s game is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
