Virginia Tech Splits Doubleheader With Virginia

VT Baseball Team 1
With a snowstorm coming Saturday, Virginia Tech was forced to play a doubleheader against Virginia on Friday night, winning the second game.

Game 1: UVA Beats Virginia Tech 9-0

Connor Coward took the mound for game one against the Cavaliers, but it was an uncharacteristic performance. Coward lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits. Coward also walked four batters and struck out two in his outing. The Cavaliers didn’t waste any time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. UVA would score again in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to win the game 9-0 over Virginia Tech. The Hoos’ Derek Casey got the win, pitching a complete game shutout while striking out seven batters and allowing just three hits. Luke Horanski, JD Munday and Nick Owens were the only Hokies to reach base, each accumulating one hit in the first game.

Game 2: Virginia Tech Beats UVA 5-4 Thanks to Game-Winning Run in 9th Inning

Game two on Friday night was more closely contested. The Hokies started things off in the third inning when Nick Menken scored on an RBI single by Nick Owens. UVA scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Nate Eikhoff to take a 2-1 lead. Stevie Mangrum scored on an RBI single by Jack Owens in the fifth to tie it up, but a home run by Brendan Rivoli gave the Cavaliers the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Hokies scored one run each in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 4-3 lead, but UVA scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game yet again. Jack Owens came to the plate in the top of the ninth with runners on the corners and a chance to take the lead. Nick Menken scored what ended up being the winning run on a suicide squeeze by Jack Owens and the Hokies won 5-4. Nick Owens went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the second game while Nick Menken went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Jack Owens was 1-for-4 in game two, but came in clutch when it mattered with two RBIs in the game. The Hokies used five pitchers in the second game on Friday night, but it was Graham Seitz that got the win. Seitz pitched 1.2 innings, giving up just two walks on the mound. With the win, Seitz improves to 3-0 on the season. The Hokies and Cavaliers had Saturday off, but they’ll return to Davenport Field for game three on Sunday. The winner of the rubber match will clinch the baseball point in the Commonwealth Clash for the 2017-2018 school year. Sunday’s first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
