Virginia Tech Football Recruiting Notes 4/10/18

Helmet 1
As Spring Game season has gotten under way, things on the recruiting trail have started to pick up with some recruits cutting down their lists and others planning official visits in the 2019 class. Virginia Tech is set for their biggest recruiting weekend of the spring while also making the cut for a pair of top recruits in the Northeast. With that said, here's some of the latest updates on VT recruiting.

Devyn Ford Will Headline Spring Game Visitors

It's a big weekend for the Hokies and it will be headlined by the official visit of Devyn Ford. At this point, it appears that Ford will be the only recruit taking an official visit, giving the Hokies a great opportunity to have him spend plenty of time with the coaches and around the program. If you don't already know, Ford is the Hokies' top target in the 2019 class and has been for a while. The borderline five-star RB plans to make a decision next month with this being the first of three official visits followed by trips to Ohio State and Penn State. Ford is a priority for the Hokies and is seen as a guy who could definitely come in and make a difference at the running back as a freshman for the Hokies. If VT is able to land him, it would be the third-straight year that VT landed their number 1 target after getting Devon Hunter in the 2017 class and Dax Hollifield in the 2018 class.

Virginia Tech Makes Top 6 for Four-Star ATH Ronnie Hickman

Ronnie Hickman is one of the best recruits in New Jersey in the 2019 class, a place where the Hokies have had some recruiting success in the past. Yesterday, Hickman cut his list down to 6 and the Hokies made the cut. https://twitter.com/asvprocket_/status/983504647930380288 Ronnie Hickman's top 6 included Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida, and in-state Rutgers. The four-star athlete is projected to play wide receiver at the collegiate level and is the latest highly talented WR who has significant interest in the Hokies. Right now, Ohio State is seen as the significant favorite for Hickman with the Buckeyes being the pick in his 247 Sports Crystal Ball. Greg Schiano has been the primary recruiter for Hickman and his time coaching at Rutgers clearly has helped the Buckeyes with their New Jersey connections. Michigan was a surprising team to not make the cut given the presence of former prominent New Jersey high school coach Chris Partridge as an assistant on their staff. The Hokies are definitely an underdog in Hickman's recruitment and will need to get him on campus to be seen as a serious contender. However, the Hokies clearly can't be ruled out just yet even if they are one of the underdogs in his recruitment.

Virginia Tech Makes Top 10 for Four-Star ATH Marquis Wilson

The state of Connecticut is having one of its best years for producing football talent in a long time with multiple highly regarded recruits including four-star ATH Marquis Wilson. Yesterday, Wilson announced his top 10. https://twitter.com/MarquisArmani/status/983540761798037506 Virginia Tech made the top 10 for Wilson along with other major programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan. Penn State is seen as the favorite for the Avon, CT athlete according to the 247 Sports Crystal Ball. While the Hokies clearly have a chance at Wilson, it's hard to see VT as a serious contender. However, if they can get Wilson on campus, it could open the door for VT to emerge as a contender in his recruitment.
