After Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds became the first brothers to be selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft, Virginia Tech did not have a single player picked on day 2 of the draft. However, that all changed on day 3.
Three Virginia Tech players were selected on day 3 including two in the fifth round. Tim Settle started the third day run of Hokies being selected 163rd overall in the fifth round by Washington. Three picks later, Wyatt Teller heard his name called by former Bills legend Thurman Thomas with Buffalo selecting Teller with the 166th overall pick.
Two rounds later, Washington made Greg Stroman their second-to-last pick of the draft selecting the VT cornerback 241st overall.
The five draft picks from Virginia Tech were the most for the Hokies since 2008 when VT had eight players selected (VT had 5 selected in 2010 as well). The four defensive selections are tied for the most since 2008 with 2006 being the last time VT had more defensive players taken.
One of the most interesting stories to come out of all this is the fact that Tim Settle and Greg Stroman will once again be playing together. The Northern Virginia natives played together at Stonewall Jackson HS where Settle was a highly regarded DT recruit and Stroman was an underrated three-star athlete before reuniting in Blacksburg. Meanwhile, Wyatt Teller joins Tremaine Edmunds on the Buffalo Bills' roster after Edmunds was the highest-selected Hokie since Kyle Fuller in 2014.
After being projected as high as an early day 2 pick at some points in the draft process, Settle fell towards the end of the fifth round with Washington making a very good pick. While there are questions about whether Settle can become an every-down guy, Settle has shown that he has the talent to be a very good rotational player and should fit well as a 3-4 nose tackle in D.C.
Wyatt Teller was consistently among the top 10 offensive guards in the NFL Draft and like Settle, was a good value in the fifth round. Teller showed the potential to develop into a starting offensive guard in the NFL and has what you're looking for in terms of size and athleticism.
Greg Stroman was one of the Hokies on the cut line for the draft, but snuck into the seventh round for his hometown team. Stroman will have a lot of work ahead to make the team, but he definitely has a great opportunity to do so on a Washington team that traded away Kendall Fuller and only added Stroman to their defensive backfield in this draft.
Virginia Tech has also seen a few players either sign undrafted free agent contracts or receive rookie minicamp invitations. Here is a list of the Hokies who have done so.
