Sergio Lopez Miro Named Virginia Tech Swimming and Diving Head Coach

Two weeks ago, Ned Skinner resigned as the head coach of the Hokie Swimming and Diving Team. Skinner's legacy included four team conference titles, two ACC Coach of the Year Awards, and 40 individual ACC Champions. For the first time in twenty years, athletic director Whit Babcock was faced with the task of finding a new man to lead the program. However, it did not take long. https://twitter.com/HokiesSwimDive/status/990944941856739328 Earlier today, Babcock named Sergio Lopez Miro as the new head coach of the Virginia Tech Swim and Dive Team. Lopez, a former swimmer for the Spanish national team, brings some experience to the table. “We enthusiastically welcome Sergio, his wife Sandy, and their children Harley and Cobi to Hokie Nation,” Babcock said. “We are thrilled to have a coach with Sergio’s pedigree and proven record of producing elite competitors in Olympic and NCAA competition. His personal history of accomplishment as a competitor was just another plus that made him stand out as our top candidate. The addition of Sergio to our roster of talented head coaches gives another reason to be encouraged about the future of our swimming and diving program under his tutelage.” Lopez's most notable coaching experience took place at West Virginia from 2004-2007. In Morgantown, Lopez gave the Mountaineers their first ever team Big East title, 18 All-Americans, and 31 individual conference champions. Lopez won coach of the year in 2006 and 2007. Lopez has also had notable work with the Singapore Swimming Asscociation, where he produced the first ever Singaporian gold-medalist in Joseph Schooling. He was also an assistant at Auburn for the past two years before being hired by Virginia Tech. Certainly, there is a lot to like about this new hire for the Virginia Tech Swim and Dive Team.
