Elite 2019 Wrestler Lewis Fernandes Commits to Virginia Tech

VT Cadets VT Flag 1
Virginia Tech Wrestling has had some success on the recruiting trail in the past, but the Hokies haven't necessarily had much success at recruiting the nation's elite wrestlers. However, that may be starting to change in the 2019 class, a recruiting class that is starting to look like the wrestling program's best ever especially after a big commitment yesterday. https://twitter.com/FloWrestling/status/993564482474405889 FloWrestling reported that Lewis Fernandes, one of the nation's top 10 2019 wrestlers according to FloWrestling, has committed to Virginia Tech. The New Jersey native was undefeated as a junior and won the prestigious FloNationals title at 220. Fernandes projects to be a heavyweight at the collegiate level and appears on course to be the long-term replacement for Andrew Dunn at HWT. With the commitment of Fernandes, the Hokies now have two of FloWrestling's top 7 wrestlers in the country alongside Ohio native Connor Brady (160lb) whose ranked 4th in the country. In addition, Virginia Tech also currently holds a commitment from Sam Latona who is one of the top wrestlers at 120 pounds and likely projects to wrestler at 125 or 133 in college. If the Hokies want to be able to consistently compete for podiums and national titles, the Hokies need to take their recruiting to the next level and are doing that in getting guys like Fernandes and Brady. Tony Robie deserves plenty of credit along with assistants Frank Molinaro and Jared Frayer. In addition, Virginia Tech's efforts to ramp up their Southeastern Regional Training Center (SERTC) appears to be making a difference in VT's perception among high school wrestlers. Congrats to Lewis Fernandes on his commitment to Virginia Tech.
