Adonis Alexander Has Left the Virginia Tech Football Team

Justin Fuente and Virginia Tech announced today that cornerback Adonis Alexander is no longer with the football team. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/1002565945146175488 Alexander was expected to be the Hokies' #1 cornerback at a spot where the Hokies were returning very little experience outside of Alexander. Now, cornerback is the Hokies' biggest question mark with Alexander gone and JUCO CB Jeremy Webb, expected to start alongside Alexander, out for the season with an injury. Justin Fuente had this to say on Alexander's departure. “We wish Adonis the very best as he determines the next steps he wishes to pursue,” Fuente said. During his three seasons in Blacksburg, Alexander had 7 interceptions including 4 as a true freshman. In addition, Alexander had 17 pass breakups, 126 tackles, and 4.5 total tackles for loss. According to Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times, Alexander's departure is academic-related. https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/1002569722204913664 This is a tough loss for Virginia Tech at a spot where the Hokies needed a veteran like Alexander. With Alexander gone and Webb out for the season, Bryce Watts, Jermaine Waller, and Jovonn Quillen are among the Hokies' top options at the cornerback. The Hokies may also consider moving whip linebacker Mook Reynolds back to cornerback as well. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero is reporting that Adonis Alexander will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1002580444611825665 This move isn't surprising given the rumored reasons for his departure. Alexander does appear likely to be selected though it would be surprising if he was taken before the fifth or sixth round given the off-the-field concerns. What helps Alexander a lot is the fact that he has the size and athleticism to be developed into a talented defensive back at the next level. 6/1 Afternoon Update Adonis Alexander has signed with Andy Ross of Select Sports Group and released a statement on his departure from Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/adross77/status/1002645896822214656 With this move, Alexander is now on course to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft happening soon. If Alexander is selected, he will be the first player taken in the NFL Supplemental Draft since Clemson OT Isaiah Battle was selected by the then St Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Supplemental Draft.
