Virginia Tech Dismisses Mook Reynolds From the Football Team

Mook Reynolds 2
Justin Fuente and Virginia Tech announced today that senior whip LB Mook Reynolds has been dismissed from the football team. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/1016294354498084865 According to the press release, Reynolds was dismissed from the team "in accordance with Virginia Tech Athletics Department policies." Fuente also revealed that Reynolds had previously been suspended from football team activities this past spring. Reynolds had transformed the whip linebacker spot into a hybrid nickelback role starting 24 games over the past two seasons for Virginia Tech. In those two seasons, Reynolds had 134 tackles, 18.5 total tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. With Mook Reynolds no longer on the football team, Devon Hunter is expected to take over the starting whip linebacker role. While Hunter may not be as good as Reynolds in man coverage, Hunter is more physically gifted while having a high defensive IQ and being effective in the past as a run-defending safety. However, Reynolds' departure does mean that Virginia Tech will start a pair of cornerbacks that have never started a game at the collegiate level. Bryce Watts, Jermaine Waller, Jovonn Quillen, Tyree Rodgers, and Caleb Farley are the top contenders to earn the starting cornerback jobs.
