Virginia Tech Basketball Recruiting Notes 8/9/18

Buzz Williams Miami 1
With the summer travel basketball circuit just about wrapped up, many top 2019 recruits are starting to trim down their recruitments with Virginia Tech making the cut for several top talents. With that said, here's the latest on some of those recruits here.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 12 for Four-Star C Qudus Wahab

It would be surprising if Virginia Tech didn't sign at least one big man in their 2019 class and four-star in-state center Qudus Wahab has emerged as one of their top targets. Wahab's interest has been mutual with VT making his top 12. https://twitter.com/bola_dee_baller/status/1026113271596834816 Wahab told us that the Hokies made his top 12 "because I believe I can achieve my dreams there both academically and athletically." Wahab also added that the Hokies are among the teams recruiting him the hardest at the moment. The Ashburn, VA star has been one of Virginia Tech's top big man targets this cycle and has only become a greater priority after another previous top frontcourt target, Armando Bacot, didn't include the Hokies in his top 5. Wahab currently doesn't have any visits scheduled, but you can expect the talented big man will take a few official visits this fall with the Hokies needing to get him on campus to remain a top contender. The recruitment of Qudus Wahab likely has a long way to go, but Virginia Tech has done well becoming a serious contender going into the fall of his senior year.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 10 for Four-Star SF Patrick Williams

Patrick Williams has emerged as one of the top 2019 recruits in the Mid-Atlantic, and the four-star wing included the Hokies in his top 10 recently. https://twitter.com/patricklw4/status/1026564504921026563 Williams' list has an ACC feel with 6 out of 10 teams being ACC schools along with four of those ACC schools being within three hours of Charlotte. In addition, Williams included a pair of Big 10 schools, a Texas program led by Shaka Smart who has plenty of Mid-Atlantic connections, and a western blue blood in Arizona. Entering the fall, Williams' recruitment appears pretty open with his official visit choices being likely to give us some insight into which schools are standing out. For the Hokies, it will be important for them to get him on campus this fall with Buzz Williams likely to try to do so on a football game weekend. Virginia Tech is in the hunt for Patrick Williams as he begins to focus in on a smaller group of schools with a largely ACC feel.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 10 for Four-Star SF Quincy Guerrier

The Hokies made a big splash in Canada a couple of years ago with Nickeil Alexander-Walker and are looking to do the same in the 2019 class with four-star SF Quincy Guerrier. So far, the Hokies are doing well in that pursuit with VT making Guerrier's top 10. https://twitter.com/quincyguerrier/status/1026988743968935938 Guerrier's top 10 has somewhat of a national feel with five different conference represented and no conference having more than three schools make the cut (Big 10, SEC). One reason the Hokies have had success in Canada is because of assistant (and Canadian) Jamie McNeilly who has proven to have some strong Canadian recruiting connections. If there is even a slight favorite, it's likely Oregon with the Ducks having the 247 Sports Crystal Ball in their favor. Dana Altman has also become one of the best recruiting head coaches in the country with several top recruits choosing the Ducks in recent seasons including five-star recruits Troy Brown (2017), Bol Bol (2018), and Louis King (2018). Vanderbilt also has done quite well recruiting top talents under Bryce Drew and looks like a major player for Guerrier. The Hokies are in the hunt for Quincy Guerrier as they hope to continue their run of success recruiting in Canada.

Virginia Tech Makes the Top 7 for Three-Star CG Brenden Tucker

The Hokies offered three-star combo guard Brenden Tucker earlier this summer and the three-star recruit included VT in his top 7. https://twitter.com/LakePoint_Hoops/status/1025922698730528768 It isn't surprising to see the Hokies make the cut for Brenden Tucker as he previously told us that Virginia Tech was his leader right after he visited Blacksburg and received a VT offer. One surprise is that Tucker's list does not include Clemson, a team considered previously to be a frontrunner for him. Looking ahead, Tucker seems likely to take a fall visit to Blacksburg with the Hokies being among the frontrunner in this seven team group. In-state Georgia also appears to be a top contender as well for Tucker while Auburn, Oregon State, and Seton Hall likely need to extend offers to become a bigger threat for Tucker. The Hokies are in a very good position for Tucker making the top 7, but still have a battle ahead for the Georgia combo guard.
