Virginia Tech Promotes Devin Johnson to Vacant Assistant Position

VT Students Miami 1
Virginia Tech announced today that Devin Johnson has been promoted from his role as Director of Player Personnel to an assistant position. https://twitter.com/HokiesMBB/status/1027638137206583297?s=19 Johnson takes over the assistant job vacated by Steve Roccaforte who recently joined the staff at East Carolina as an assistant. Johnson's hiring maintains continuity within the program as Johnson came with Buzz Williams to Blacksburg four years ago as the Director of Player Personnel. While some may have hoped for a big time assistant or a prominent high mid-major assistant, hiring an assistant like that was never realistic. While Johnson's hiring may not be the flashiest, it's clear that Johnson is a guy Buzz Williams trusts. In addition, his familiarity with the program prevents the Hokies from bringing in a prominent assistant who may have to get acclimated during a time when offseason workouts are happening and recruiting is about to pick up with plenty of recruits poised to take official visits this fall. Johnson has paid his dues working in an off-the-recruiting trail role for the past four seasons after spending the previous five years working for the New Orleans Pelicans. Johnson's path is similar to Jamie McNeilly who had an off-the-recruiting trail role at Marquette before following Buzz Williams to Blacksburg as an assistant coach. Congrats to Devin Johnson on his promotion.
