Hokies Reveal Uniform for Week One

Hokie Bird 1 1
Adding excitement to the already incredibly-hyped up game at Florida State this weekend, the Virginia Tech football team has announced the uniforms that the Hokies will wear Monday night. Tech will take the field on Labor Day donning white jerseys and pants paired with matte maroon helmets. In the first game with redesigned uniforms, the Hokies white jerseys will feature maroon numbers and orange shoulder stripes. The uniform matchup brings to mind last season’s game against Miami, in which the Hokies did sport an all-white combination to match the Canes’ all-black. Perhaps the component of these uniforms that has received the most attention and praise since the announcement is the matte helmets. I like the fact that the Hokies are branching out and trying the matte maroon helmets, which, according to Clark Ruhland, have only been worn once in program history – against Rutgers in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. However, I was personally hoping for a completely white uniform in this case. I think a helmet that would fit better here would be the 2016 Belk Bowl style helmets – white with a maroon VT, orange stripe down the middle and metallic maroon facemask. Another personal favorite of mine that would have worked here is the white chevron helmets worn in the 2015 and 2016 seasons, which highlighted the white, orange and maroon aspects of Virginia Tech’s color scheme, but haven’t been broken out since the Syracuse game in 2016 according to Ruhland's website. Overall, this is a solid uniform choice by the Hokies and has been well-received by fans on social media. The maroon helmets are a more traditional look for Tech and tend to be a fan-favorite, so I think it was a good decision for the opening game of the 2018 season. Fans will get their first real look at the Hokies’ uniforms on Monday night as Tech takes on Florida State in Tallahassee. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
