As Virginia Tech prepares for its football game against East Carolina this coming weekend, those around the program are closely monitoring the potential impacts of Hurricane Florence. Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock posted an update on Twitter late Monday afternoon, saying that the school is keeping an eye on the weather and will release an official update on Wednesday. [embed]https://twitter.com/WhitBabcock/status/1039243435503505408[/embed] The game is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, but Hurricane Florence could very well get in the way of those plans. Meteorologists around the country have been watching the storm, which is currently a Category 4 hurricane and expected to hit the Blacksburg area later this week. Latest forecasts show the New River Valley in a high-risk area for the storm and project anywhere from a few inches to a foot of rain. Coastal areas will be hit the hardest, and the governors of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have all ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal residents. East Carolina has canceled all classes starting Tuesday at 12 p.m. Other programs in the state of North Carolina have started taking measures to deal with the impacts of the hurricane. Coastal Carolina has decided to move their game against Campbell to Wednesday night and to play it at Campbell. Virginia Tech is no stranger to playing in hurricanes. In 2016, the Hokies faced UNC in the remnants of Hurricane Matthew, defeating the Tar Heels 34-3 in Chapel Hill. By the time that game was played, though, the hurricane had moved mostly south and the leftover storms were not as strong as predicted. Hurricane Florence, on the other hand, is expected to move to the north and directly over Virginia. The storm has the potential to be extremely dangerous and everyone within the track is encouraged to take the necessary steps to prepare for such a hurricane. For updates on Virginia Tech’s game this weekend, fans should stay on the lookout for an official statement from the university on Wednesday.
