The rankings have come out for Week 5 of the college football season, and Virginia Tech has found itself near the bottom of one poll and dropped out of the other. The Hokies came in at No. 24 in the Amway Coaches’ Poll this afternoon while dropping out of the AP Top 25 poll. Following Virginia Tech’s 49-35 loss at Old Dominion, voters responded with a drastic drop in both polls for the Hokies. Tech went into yesterday’s game ranked No. 10 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 13 in the AP Top 25. Only the coaches thought the team worthy of being ranked following the disastrous upset. Virginia Tech still received 55 votes from AP voters, which would be equal to being ranked No. 28 if the poll ran past 25. Neill Ostrout of the Journal Inquirer in Manchester, Conn. kept the Hokies at No. 12 for this week, but chalked it up to not re-checking his ballot before submission, according to his Twitter account. Looking ahead, Virginia Tech has three ranked opponents left on its schedule, starting with No. 22 Duke next weekend followed with No. 8 Notre Dame the following weekend. No. 16 Miami is the third remaining ranked opponent, with the Hurricanes coming to Blacksburg on Nov. 17. Other ACC schools the received votes in this week’s AP Top 25 are NC State (28) and Syracuse (25). Clemson is the highest-ranked ACC team, coming in at No. 3 and receiving one first-place vote. Virginia Tech will try to get back into the rankings when it takes on Duke next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Durham.
