Virginia Tech safety Chamarri Conner will wear the honorary No. 25 jersey this weekend against North Carolina, the team’s Twitter account announced on Thursday. [embed]https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/1050474076035342337[/embed] Conner becomes just the third freshman to be honored with the jersey, joining Divine Deablo and Oscar Bradburn. Deablo wore the jersey in 2016 against Pittsburgh while Bradburn received the honor last season against UNC. Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente was quoted in a tweet by HokiesFB saying, “He’s been locked in since he got here. He’s gotten better week after week, and he does what he’s coached to do. He’s disciplined, and he’s doing it all as a true freshman.” Conner has played in all five games for the Hokies this season, but saw significant playing time against William and Mary. Conner made five tackles in the 62-17 win over the Tribe, including three solo tackles. He also registered one quarterback hurry in the game. Conner came to Virginia Tech from Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., where he helped his defense average 2.5 turnovers per game in his senior season. Conner joins Ricky Walker, Eric Kumah, Jovonn Quillen, Bradburn and Khalil Ladler as the players to be honored with the No. 25 jersey this season. Ladler made nine total tackles last week in the jersey, setting his season high while earning Tech Lunch Pail Defensive Hokie of the Game. Fans can see Conner in the jersey when he takes the field with the rest of the Hokies on Saturday night. Virginia Tech kicks off against UNC at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
