Virginia Tech Makes the Top 5 for Four-Star LB Kuony Deng After Official Visit

Last week, Virginia Tech only had a few recruits on campus, but that group included arguably their top remaining 2019 target in four-star JUCO LB Kuony Deng who took his official visit surrounding the Hokies' game against Georgia Tech. https://twitter.com/Kd_2Three/status/1055831475730419713 "I had a great time, it was cool to spend time with the coaches and players. We had been trying to make this visit happen for a while so I’m glad I finally made it out," Deng told us about his visit. What stood out about his visit? "The family atmosphere within the program, they preach family everywhere you go but you can tell the schools that really live it everyday," Deng said. Deng added that Virginia Tech's family atmosphere fits the bill as one that "lives it everyday." While on his visit, Deng had a chance to break down some film with Bud Foster and the defensive staff who gave him an idea of the type of player Deng could be for the Hokies as a backer in the Hokies' defensive scheme. "The biggest thing for me is maximizing my skill set. Coach Foster talked to me about doing a lot of the same things that Tremaine Edmunds did in this defense," Deng said. Like Edmunds, Deng also has a unique blend of athleticism and size that could make him a great fit in the backer spot. Deng also has the versatility to play defensive end though the Hokies are recruiting him primarily as a backer. At this point, Virginia Tech looks like a top contender on paper as Deng has already shown a great willingness and desire to set up and take a rare midweek official visit. In addition, Deng has a close connection with Virginia Tech assistant Justin Hamilton who coached Deng for a year at VMI before Deng chose to go the JUCO route to try to play at a higher level. That relationship is an x-factor to keep an eye on for the Hokies. Virginia Tech continues to be a top contender for Kuony Deng as the Hokies keep making the talented JUCO linebacker a top priority.

Deng is ranked as the ninth best JUCO recruit by the 247 Sports Composite, tenth best by Rivals, and 14th best by 247 Sports with Rivals and the 247 Sports Composite rating him as a four-star recruit. Deng is also ranked as the best JUCO OLB recruit by 247 Sports and the 247 Sports Composite.
