Tre Turner, Dax Hollifield are the Hokies of the Game Against Miami

Dax Hollifield 2 1
Virginia Tech's longest losing streak of the Justin Fuente era was extended today as the Hokies suffered their fourth-straight loss 38-14 to Miami. Once again, the third quarter proved to be a nightmare as the Hurricanes outscored the Hokies 21-0, pushing the score to what the final would turn out to be while keeping the Hokies off the board in the second half. While this was another disappointment for Virginia Tech, there were a couple performances worthy of this week's Hokies of the Game honors, both of which go to true freshman.

Offensive Hokie of the Game: Tre Turner

With Eric Kumah and Hezekiah Grimsley out, Tre Turner stepped his game up and put together a strong performance for the Hokies. Turner had a career high 80 yards on 4 receptions while also having a 20-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep during the first half, finishing the game with 25 net yards on 3 carries. Turner was productive in a multitude of ways stretching the field at times while also being very effective once he gets the ball in his hands. While Turner still has lots of room to grow as a receiver, it's clear that the freshman from Greensboro has a bright future ahead of him especially with his playmaking ability once he gets the ball in his hands. Damon Hazelton led the Hokies with 5 receptions in addition to 58 yards though a second half fumble was a tough moment for Virginia Tech that swung momentum towards Miami. Dalton Keene was solid with 3 catches for 33 yards and a touchdown as the Hokies continue to involve Keene more in the offense.

Defensive Hokie of the Game: Dax Hollifield

Dax Hollifield showed why he has the potential to be a future star with a dominant first half on his way to earning today's Defensive Hokie of the Game honors. Hollifield was quiet in the second half but his 6 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack in the first half were more than enough to earn Hokie of the Game honors this week. Hollifield wasn't perfect but he was active early and often providing plenty of pressure while seeming to have a nose for making big stops both with Miami's rushing attack and his first half sack. In addition, Hollifield has shown plenty of leadership and intensity on the field that the Hokies' defense has seemed to feed off of at times, something that is uncommon for a true freshman. Hollifield has a very bright future and is already showing how he has the potential to become one of the best linebackers in Virginia Tech history. Rayshard Ashby led the Hokies' defense with 14 tackles along with 2 assisted tackles for loss while Reggie Floyd had 11 tackles and 0.5 total tackles for loss. Ricky Walker had a strong game on the interior with 5 tackles including 2.5 total tackles for loss in what was one of his best games of the season. Congrats to Tre Turner and Dax Hollifield on being the Hokies of the Game this week.
