LB Rico Kearney Will Transfer Away From Virginia Tech

Defense 3
Weeks after making his first career start against Boston College and earning Hokie of the Game honors, LB Rico Kearney announced today that he is transferring away from Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/38savage_VT/status/1064225725191020544 Kearney was the Hokies' backup mike linebacker this season and had 35 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 fumble recovery including 18 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss against Boston College. Kearney was a redshirt freshman and will have at least two years of eligibility remaining. The loss isn't too surprising given how Kearney seemed to be stuck behind Rayshard Ashby at the MLB with Dax Hollifield possibly moving to that spot next season especially if the Hokies gain a commitment from four-star JUCO LB/DE Kuony Deng who is being pursued as a backer. The timing of the announcement is odd though given the fact that it comes the day after the Hokies' fourth-straight loss and days before VT's game against Virginia though it's not as surprising given how Kearney didn't appear to be on the field yesterday against Miami. With Kearney's departure, Keshon Artis may slide into the backup mike linebacker job on the Hokies' depth chart especially since Artis has played several games on special teams this season and cannot redshirt.
