Following its 89-83 win over Purdue in the Charleston Classic final on Sunday night, the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team has moved up to No. 13 in the latest AP Poll. The Hokies jumped three spots from their previous ranking of No. 16. Virginia Tech won its fourth game of the season on Sunday to stay undefeated and win its first tournament championship since the 2008 Holiday Festival in New York. The win yesterday came over a Top 25 team as Purdue was ranked No. 23 at the time. The Boilermakers dropped one spot to No. 24 in this week’s rankings. Virginia Tech is the fourth-highest ranked ACC team in the AP Poll this week, behind No. 1 Duke, No. 4 Virginia and No. 7 North Carolina. No. 14 Florida State and No. 16 Clemson are the remaining ACC teams to be featured in this week’s poll. Many thought the team would crack the top 10 this week, including Daily Press writer Norm Wood, who had the Hokies at No. 10 in his ballot, and CBS writer Jon Rothstein, who had Virginia Tech at No. 9 in his rankings. The next Top 25 team that the Hokies are scheduled to face is Virginia. The in-state rivals square off on Jan. 15 in Charlottesville. The Hokies’ Dec. 15 game in Atlantic City against Washington has the potential to be a Top 25 matchup as the Huskies received 29 votes in this week’s poll. Virginia Tech gets Thanksgiving week off before taking on Saint Francis (Pa.) in Blacksburg on Saturday Nov. 24. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
