The annual rivalry game between Virginia Tech and Virginia is a tradition that will reach 100 years this season. When the teams take the field on Friday and battle it out for the Commonwealth Cup, Virginia Tech will don a uniform just as traditional, with a bit of a twist. [embed]https://twitter.com/HokiesFB/status/1065032040427311105[/embed] The Hokies' uniform this weekend consists of a matte maroon helmet with white facemask, maroon jersey and white pants. Just three weeks ago against Boston College, the Hokies broke out the white facemasks for the first time this season. These helmets are reminiscent of the Frank Beamer era of Virginia Tech football, and were even worn during Beamer's final two games as head coach. This will be the fifth time this season that Virginia Tech has worn matte maroon helmets, and the team hasn't had much luck in them. The Hokies are 1-3 in these helmets, winning against Florida State but losing to Notre Dame, Pitt and Miami. The Hokies have worn some variant of the maroon-maroon-white combination three times this season, and are 1-2 in those games. They beat UNC in the first game featuring this uniform, but lost to Georgia Tech and Boston College. I personally like this uniform choice for this weekend's game. As I mentioned earlier, these uniforms are one of the more traditional looks that the team has and there is no better game to wear a traditional uniform like this than in your biggest rivalry. I like the twist that the team added by having matte maroon instead of the usual maroon helmets as it gives the uniform a modern element. Fans will get to see these uniforms in action when Virginia Tech takes on UVA at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
