Buzz Williams has some serious respect for Virginia Tech head football coach Justin Fuente. As Williams spoke with the media following his team’s 94-40 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday, he had high praise for Fuente and the Hokies football team. “I wanted to say congratulations,” Williams started out. “I didn’t get to watch the football game, but I’ve learned so much from Coach Fuente from watching, from studying.” Fuente led the football team to a 41-20 victory over Marshall earlier in the day Saturday, earning the team’s 26th straight bowl berth. Virginia Tech will take on Cincinnati in the Military Bowl on Dec. 31. The season didn’t always look that way, though, as the Hokies had to win their last two games of the season in order to become bowl eligible. Williams took notice of that, and had good things to say regarding the football team’s resilience. “For them to have had the season that they’ve had and for it to come down to the last nine days, the response of those players and those coaches and the people that you guys never write about nor do I even know their names, for those guys to have done what they’ve done, I think it’s absolutely remarkable,” Williams said. Virginia Tech has seen success in both sports recently, making the postseason in football and basketball each of the past two seasons. With the way the basketball team is looking early this year, it seems as if that streak could reach three consecutive seasons. But right now, Williams just wants to heap praise on his gridiron counterparts. “I know it’s the pace of the world and it’s fun to be the ‘gotcha’ mentality, but for the response of that group to keep all of that going in the direction, I think that we should all be doing backflips,” Williams said.
