Following a week in which they lost a close one on the road and dominated at home, the Hokies basketball team fell just two spots in the latest AP Poll. Virginia Tech came in this week at No. 15 in the country. Tech lost 63-62 at Penn State on Tuesday night after not being able to capitalize on a last-second opportunity. The Hokies then came home on Saturday evening and switched gears, defeating Central Connecticut State 94-40. The loss was enough to convince the voters that the team is no longer deserving of the No. 13 spot, but it wasn’t enough to drop them too far down the list. The Hokies are still in the Top 15, and with a record of 6-1, it’s very possible to see them climbing the polls again later this season. Other ACC teams to be ranked this week include No. 3 Duke and No. 4 Virginia, the only teams to be in the Top 10. Neither team saw any change in the rankings from last week. Florida State moved up four spots to No. 11 in this week’s poll. The Seminoles won 73-72 against Purdue in Tallahassee on Wednesday. North Carolina fell in this week’s rankings as well, dropping three spots to No. 14. In the Tar Heels only game this week, they lost 84-67 at Michigan. Other ACC schools receiving votes are Syracuse, NC State, Louisville, Clemson, Notre Dame and Boston College. Virginia Tech’s next Top 25 matchup will likely be against Virginia on Jan. 15, but the Hokies play Notre Dame on Jan. 1. If the Fighting Irish can make a run and find themselves in the rankings before then, the ACC-opener in Blacksburg could be an intriguing one to watch.
