Freshman guard Shaniya Jones informed women's basketball head coach Kenny Brooks of her intention to transfer from Virginia Tech on Tuesday. In five game appearances this season, Jones averaged 2.6 points and 10 minutes per game. Head Coach Kenny Brooks seemed somewhat surprised by her decision. He said in a statement on Tuesday, "While we are disappointed in her decision, we are excited about the the direction this team is headed. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors." Coming out of Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC, Jones was a highly touted recruit. She earned all-state honors and led Wesleyan to a state championship in her senior season. ESPN W ranked her as 88th in their top 100 recruits for the 2018 class. The decision is a bit surprising given the fact that Jones looked to be in line for more playing time next season or even sooner. Dara Mabrey has emerged as the starter at point guard, but both Rachel Camp and Taylor Emery will graduate after this season. The Hokies will look to Mabrey and other young guards such as Aisha Sheppard to fill Jones's minutes as they take on Radford tonight at 7 pm.
