After gaining a commitment from JUCO DT Dashawn Crawford earlier this week, the Hokies added another DT to their 2019 class via a preferred walk-on from Southwest Virginia. DT Maxx Philpott out of Glenvar, VA told us that he has committed to Virginia Tech as a preferred walk-on, confirming what was first reported by Evan Watkins of VT Scoop. Philpott is the Hokies' most prominent preferred walk-on commit to date. Philpott chose the Hokies over scholarship offers from Elon and Fordham along with preferred walk-on offers from multiple ACC and FBS programs. The Glenvar DT was dominant this past season putting up insane numbers as he told us with 42 total tackles for loss including 18 sacks along with 106 tackles overall on the season. In addition, Philpott was the Region and District Player of the Year in his area while also earning All-Region 2C First Team honors on the defensive and offensive lines. So why did Philpott choose a preferred walk-on offer at Virginia Tech over FCS scholarship offers? "I chose VT because it was close to home, I love the team, and I truly believe that I can play there and earn a scholarship," Philpott said. When we asked about whether the Hokies' depth chart concerns at DT had an impact on his decision, he had this to say. "Definitely, I feel like I could come in and surprise a lot of people and contribute," Philpott said. While the Hokies are likely to look to add at least one more on-scholarship defensive tackle, they've added one of the top preferred walk-on recruits in the Mid-Atlantic in Maxx Philpott.
