The Hokies gained their first pickup of the early signing period in cornerback Brion Murray on Wednesday morning. The 5'10'', 174 pound CB from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas chose Virginia Tech over Texas Tech. https://twitter.com/HokiesFB/status/1075372096988110848?s=19 Murray is the first player to sign with the Hokies who had not previously given a verbal commitment. Even though Virginia Tech did not officially give him an offer until December 12, they were courting him for much longer than that. Murray visited Blacksburg for the first time last Wednesday, and he enjoyed it enough to pick the Hokies over the Red Raiders just a week later. He was the eleventh member of Virginia Tech's 2019 class to sign on Wednesday. In high school, Murray focused more on basketball than football. In fact, it was not until his junior year that he even began playing football. Now, only a couple years later, he is headed to a Power 5 school on the gridiron. “It really feels unbelievable,” Murray said to 247Sports earlier this week. “It kind of feels like a dream because I never imagined this in my entire life. Everybody just always thought I would play basketball at a Division II or maybe go overseas but just having a chance for football and getting the offer to go Division I in football, you never really imagine it happening, so for it to happen, it just feels unbelievable and I just wake up every morning and I thank God.” In 10 games at Coffeyville CC, Murray totaled 13 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 pass breakups, and 1 interception. He will have 3 years of eligibility left at Virginia Tech. For the Hokies, Murray was a much needed addition to a somewhat thin secondary. Particularly at cornerback, Virginia Tech barely had a two-deep at times this season. With the status of Jeremy Webb up in the air after yet another injury, Murray will certainly compete for immediate playing time.
