What to Watch for on Early Signing Day 2019 for Virginia Tech

Houshun Gaines Entrance 1 1
Early Signing Day is here as Virginia Tech enters the day with 19 commits, but is expected to leave it with at least 18 signees. Here's what we're watching going into today's major Early Signing Day.

JUCO CB Brion Murray Makes His Decision

It's decision day for Brion Murray as the JUCO cornerback previously told us that he would sign today and enroll early at the school of his choice. Virginia Tech and Texas Tech are the two contenders for Murray with the JUCO CB visiting the Hokies just over a week ago while not taking a visit to Texas Tech before the window. Murray also did receive in-home visits from the cornerbacks coaches for Virginia Tech and Texas Tech. Right now, Virginia Tech looks like the overwhelming favorite for the Delaware native and Coffeyville CC cornerback. Murray will have three years of eligibility wherever he does end up signing, making him one of the few JUCO recruits in the country that will have that opportunity. We're not sure of the timing of a possible announcement but whenever that does come, Virginia Tech looks like the favorite especially after a strong recruiting last week from his official visit to Brian Mitchell offering him on his in-home visit.

Update: Brion Murray has signed with Virginia Tech over Texas Tech, becoming VT's 20th commit and third from the JUCO ranks.

Will Three-Star LB Eugene Asante Sign Today?

Eugene Asante is the only player who took an official visit this past weekend who isn't a Virginia Tech commit currently after three-star DT Joshua Fuga and three-star JUCO LB Amare Barno both jumped into VT's 2019 class. The question remains whether Asante will end up in Blacksburg and whether he'll decide to do so today. Asante has seen his recruitment take off this month starting with a Virginia Tech offer. From there, four other power 5 programs have extended offers including TCU, Maryland, North Carolina, and UCLA. However, the only official visit Asante took before today was to Blacksburg this past weekend which appeared to go extremely well according to Asante's Twitter. https://twitter.com/sectorocho/status/1074366703629467650 From what we've heard, there is definitely a realistic chance that Asante could decide to end it today which obviously would be fantastic news for Virginia Tech. Whether he does or doesn't, the Hokies have emerged as the frontrunner in his recruitment.

Will Any of Virginia Tech's Current Commits Not Sign?

Currently, almost all of Virginia Tech's 19 commits are expected to sign with the only one that won't being VT's earliest current 2019 commit, three-star ATH Jahad Carter. At the point of this story, several of Virginia Tech's commits have already signed with most, if not all of the other 18 likely to be in before Early Signing Day. While last year saw the surprise of three-star DT Cam Goode not signing during the Early Signing Window, no surprises lack of signings are expected beyond Carter. However, this is recruiting where things can change quickly.
