Virginia Tech men’s basketball is inching closer to history every week. The Hokies came in at No. 9 in the latest AP Poll, one spot short of the program’s all-time highest ranking. After a dominating win over Notre Dame on New Year’s Day and a close game against Boston College on Saturday afternoon, writers deemed the team deserving of a small bump in the rankings. Multiple top 10 teams lost this week, including Nevada and Florida State, helping the Hokies' case to move up. With the new poll out, Tech is the third-highest ranked ACC team, behind No. 1 Duke and No. 4 Virginia. The remaining ACC teams to be featured in this week’s ranking are all in the top 15. No. 12 North Carolina, No. 13 Florida State and No. 15 NC State round out the conference teams in this week’s poll. Many thought that the combination of Tech’s wins and other programs’ losses this week would pave the way for the Hokies to reach their highest ranking in team history, but they’ll have to wait at least one more week to get that far. Multiple voters had the Hokies at No. 8 in this week’s poll, including Virginia Tech beat writer Norm Wood and CBS reporter Seth Davis. Virginia Tech will have one game this week as the Hokies travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in the first ACC road game of the season. After that, the team will travel to Charlottesville on Jan. 15 for a top-10 matchup against in-state rival Virginia, which will be just the second ranked matchup Tech has played this season.
